US Embassy Expects Indian Nationals and Students to Follow Immigration Rules Seriously to Avoid Consequences

When a student from India earns his or her student visa, it is like a dream come true for them, it is all they have imagined of achieving something over the years. The entire family is happy and proud, relatives also call to congratulate. As a student we go on farewell trips, say our goodbyes and promise keeping in touch. Nutshell once we reach the USA and the euphoria settles, we tend to be negligent towards certain things, be it the laws of that country, or our responsibility towards our studies and the norms of the university, and even in some cases the duration of stay can exceed the permissible time limit. That is exactly, what the US Embassy has warned Indian nationals against.
The US Embassy in India has issued a strong caution to international pupils studying in the US to scrupulously adhere to the terms of their student visas. Since failing to comply could result in the immediate revocation of their student visa, it is crucial that they maintain a satisfactory record with their academic program.
If a student leaves their program, skips classes, or drops out without informing to university, they could face harsh repercussions, such as:
● Visa Revocation: Their student visa is immediately revoked.
● Removal of eligibility for subsequent /future US visas
● Deportation: The possibility of leaving the United States
In the past few weeks, foreign students all around the United States have experienced unexpected terminations of their legal status and revocation of their visas. About 1,222 students from 187 institutions have been affected since the end of March 2025. Additionally, SEVIS (the database that contains the details of international students) has revoked the visas of at least 4,736 students.
To prevent visas from being revoked, overseas students need to:
● Continue to enrol in full-time programs
● Attend classes regularly and don't miss any
● Report any changes to Designated School Official (DSO) and the international student office at university
● Observe the particular program requirements and refrain from making changes without permission
According to US Embassy in India, any Indian nationals who overstay in USA may face deportation and a lifelong prohibition from entering the US in the future. Before making travel or relocation plans, the embassy has recommended all travelers to carefully adhere to the terms of their visas and seek advice from immigration lawyers and official authorities.
In all, we as Indian nationals must be responsible and follow the law of the land in the USA, no matter what role we are there in, and what kind of visa we are carrying.
