Germany Raised the Proof of Funds Requirements for Student Visa Applicants

August 5, 2024

A slight increase in proof-of-funds criteria for the 2024–2025 academic year has been confirmed by the German government. The evidence of finance requirements for applicants for student visas was € 11,208 January 1, 2023. The amount of money needed will rise to € 11,904 for the upcoming school year, which is roughly 6%more than the previous amount.

Students can fulfil the funding requirement through a variety of methods, according to the Study in Germany website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. These include using a blocked account, presenting a bank guarantee, or submitting verified paperwork outlining the family's assets and income. This special purpose account is a type of bank account that is specifically made for overseas students and is provided by banking and providers of services such as Fintiba, Expatrio, and Coracle. Because students cannot use the account until they get to Germany, it is referred to be "blocked." After that, they are only allowed to withdraw money up to a predetermined monthly limit.

Germany is near the upper end of the spectrum among global study destinations with the new need of € 11,904. It is comparable to Australia (AU$29,710), Canada (CA$20,635),or Ireland (€10,680), and France (€7,980). Over the past few months, both Australian and Canadian governments have declared significant increases in their funding needs. Canada essentially quadrupled its proof of funding requirement in December 2023. Additionally, in May 2024, Australia confirmed a20%+ hike, the second in as many years. In 2022–2023, foreign enrolment in Germany hit a record high during the winter semester. At that time, there were around 370,000 international students registered in Germany, a 5% rise from2021–2022, and the sixth year in a row of growth.

Apart from this, Germany recognizes the shortcomings it is facing, acknowledges it, and is constantly looking to improve and boost its student numbers. The global scenario of international education is changing, and Germany has all the tools to take advantage of the situation, as it has all the systems and standards in place to host large number of international students. Germany has flown under the radar for a long time, operating within its limits in the study abroad industry while maintaining exceptional standards. Now they realize that the time has come to expand the sector and get top-class talent contributing to their economy.

Prominent figures at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are aware of important issues that must be addressed in order to further boost international enrolment. For Visa - the biggest obstacle is processing time, which is followed by housing constraints for international students and, of course, the expense of residing and attending school in Germany. The relevant organization is making every effort to address the issues at hand. They also understand the importance of post-study work, which is why they have emphasized the need for improved career guidance for students and have completed number of programs to better integrate graduates into the workforce.
