New Zealand Welcomed More than 69,000 International Students in 2023

In 2023,69,135 international students attended New Zealand's colleges and universities, language schools, and vocational schools combined a 67% increase in overall foreign enrolment over 2022. With almost 115,000 international students enrolling in 2019, this amounts to 60% of the total number of international students. New Zealand's borders were blocked for the longest period of time during the pandemic compared to other popular English-speaking countries, and they weren't entirely reopened until mid of 2022. This contributes to the sluggish recovery of international student enrolment in New Zealand. Another consideration is that balance is given precedence over unrestricted growth in New Zealand's worldwide education plan. The objective is to create a sustainable industry that benefits the entire nation on an all-encompassing level.
More than69,000 international students have enrolled worldwide, which is wonderful for New Zealand’s education system and communities. It indicates that New Zealand is a desirable destination for students, providing high-quality education both within and outside of the classroom in a friendly, secure setting. Since New Zealand is a tiny nation, many students find that interacting with people from different cultures helps them better comprehend the problems that our complicated world faces. The diverse college community can foster greater tolerance and understanding during this precarious geopolitical period.
Of all categories in New Zealand's overseas education business, the university sector has recovered the most, achieving 86% of pre-pandemic volumes with 29,065students overall (+21% over 2022). The schools sector also grew dramatically to14,125 (+138%), while the English-language sector grew the most year over year, enrolling 9,569 pupils in 2023 compared to just 1,565 in 2022 (+511%). In 2023,the number of overseas students registered in New Zealand's Private Training Establishments (PTEs) and Te Pūkenga (New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology) increased by 59% and 74%, respectively, compared to 2022.
China(35%) & India (11%), which collectively account for almost half of all enrolments (46%), continue to be major sources of funding for New Zealand's educational institutions. In Australia & the UK, where Chinese and Indian students account for 45% and 41% of all international enrolment respectively, this dependence on the top two source markets is comparable to that of Canada and America (51% and 52%, respectively). Japan is New Zealand's third biggest source market (10%), followed by South Korea (5%), Thailand (4%). No other nation accounts for more than 4% of all international enrolment.
The New Zealand government is committed to providing top-notch international education in order to create a prosperous and globally integrated New Zealand. To attract foreign students across a wide range of nations, they are aggressively broadening their recruitment activities.
